Ratan Tata, the former chairman of the Tata Group, is counted among the prestigious industrialists not only in the country but around the world. Ratan Tata started the car business of Tata Group. There is an anecdote about Tata Motors which is quite inspiring and interesting. Actually, 

Ratan Tata started the car business in the year 1998 and manufactured the first car passenger car Tata Indica.

The Tata Indica was the first car in the country to be designed by an Indian company. Ratan Tata was very excited about the Tata Indica, but after a year, his enthusiasm disappeared from him. In fact, the sales of Tata Indica were very disappointing and the company went into loss. After which in the year 1999, Ratan Tata decided to sell his car business.

American carmaker Ford expressed interest in buying Tata’s car business and invited Ratan Tata and his team to Detroit, where Ford Motors is headquartered, for the deal. 

Ratan Tata and his team had a meeting with Ford Motors officials for about 3 hours but during this, the behavior of Ford officials was a bit abusive.

Ford executives told Ratan Tata that ‘you don’t know anything then why did you start making cars?’ Ford officials said that ‘they are doing us a favor by buying our car division.’ Ratan from this insult. Tata was deeply hurt and canceled the deal. After this Ratan Tata and his team returned from Detroit to New York the same evening.

Praveen Kadale, a top Tata executive who was part of the team that went to deal with Ford, shared this anecdote during an event. Kadale told that Ratan Tata was very disappointed when he came back to New York from Detroit.

Returning to India, Ratan Tata once again focused on the car division of Tata Motors. With time Ratan Tata’s hard work and dedication paid off and Tata Motors became a successful company. In the year 2008, the car of Tata Motors became the best selling car. Meanwhile, Ford Motors had suffered a lot due to the recession of 2008.

Just After 9 Years When Ford Was Suffering Huge Losses Because Of Jaguar And Landrover, Ratan Tata Bought Ford’s Marquee Brands Jaguar And Land Rover (JLR). Ford Told That The Tata Group Did A Big Favour On Them By Buying JLR.

During that time the condition of Ford Motors was so bad that it decided to sell its Jaguar and Land Rover brands. Then Ratan Tata decided to buy both these brands of Ford. For this deal, Ford’s owner and his team came to Mumbai to sell these two brands.

During this meeting, Bill Ford, the owner of Ford Motors, told Ratan Tata that ‘You are doing us a favor by buying Jaguar and Land Rover.’ Let us tell you that Ratan Tata did not say anything to Bill Ford, due to which he was insulted. 

Ford executives said that ‘they are doing us a favor by buying out our car division.’
